Generation EU–India hosted a webinar on 31 July 2026, bringing together Associate Members from across Europe and India for an intimate conversation on the fast-evolving and multi-dimensional nature of Europe’s migrant integration policies.
The guest of the day was Dr Rama Srinivasan, researcher, journalist and author of Courting Desire: Litigating for Love in North India (Rutgers University Press). She completed her postdoctoral project on the South Asian diaspora in Italy, Germany, and France as a Marie Skłodowska Curie Fellow (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Italy). The event was moderated by Valentina Barnabei, Event Officer at Generation EU-India (GenEI) with opening remarks by Matias Diaz (Co-Founder GenEI).
Dr. Rama Srinivasan examined three case studies of Indian migration to various EU member states through the intersection of law, integration, and social norms. She argued that migration is shaped not only by legal frameworks but also by the norms, expectations, and judgments of multiple stakeholders. While laws may appear objective, their implementation within state institutions is often subjective.
Touching upon the variances in migration and integration policies across Germany, Italy, and France, the talk underlined how in practice, integration is often a two-way street, even though existing policy frameworks often conflate integration with assimilation.
The webinar concluded with Dr Srinivasan answering questions posed by our members, offering reflections on existing tensions between immigrant labour as an economic necessity and how European states will maintain legal pathways for migration amid increasingly restrictive political climates.
